Odisha (Orissa)
In October 2014, I stayed for a week in the state of Odisha (formerly Orissa) on India’s East coast. My first destination was Bhubaneswar, a city whose main attraction are the many ancient temples, some of them dating back to the first century BC. From there I took day trips to the caves of Khandagiri and Udayagiri, as well as the Buddhist pagoda at Dhauli. Another highlight was Konarak with its enormous Sun Temple.
Puri, my final stop, is a city by the sea. It also features a number of temples, including the sprawling Sri Jagannath temple complex which attracts a huge number of visitors from all over India. For me personally, though, the main attraction was the beach, busy with the families of the pilgrims, and just a fun place to hang out, both during the day and during the evening.
I left Puri for Kolkata on 11 October, which was a day before the cyclone Hudhud hit the states of Odisha and Andrha Pradesh with devastating force. The video, Station to Station, was recorded during that train ride. I shot it on the iphone, and later in Kolkata edited it in iMovie on the iphone.
