Kolkata, West Bengal
Kolkata, previously called Calcutta, was the capital of the British Raj during the British occupation. I visited the city for the first time in 1986, and I can truly say that it gave me nightmares. It took me almost 30 years to set foot there again, only to find a city much changed, for the better. I have no photos from the original trip, so the photos presented here are from three visits which took place between 2013 and 2015.Images from the Durga Pujas (a religious festival honouring the goddess Durga), the Kali Pujas (in honour of the goddess Kali), and DIwali, the Indian festival of light.
Photos in this set were taken outside the city of Kolkata, mostly in Chandannagar, across the Hoogly river, an area which once belonged to the French (and Portuguese and Swedes).
